Dylan Hecht, a former pitching prospect from California, has a career filled with dramatic ups and downs. Originally a catcher, he transitioned to pitching in middle school. By his senior year of high school, he was already throwing 94 mph (151.2 km/h). In his freshman year of college (University of California, Santa Barbara), he further improved, reaching 98 mph (157.7 km/h), establishing himself as a highly promising pitcher.
However, during his sophomore year, Hecht was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)—a condition that compresses nerves, causing numbness in the hands and weakness in the arm. This diagnosis posed a serious threat to his pitching career. From 2014 to 2018, without knowing the exact cause of his condition, he was completely unable to pitch.
Despite graduating from college in 2017, his symptoms persisted. It wasn’t until 2018 that doctors finally identified the cause, leading to a surgical procedure to remove part of his rib and scalene muscles. This operation gave him hope for a return to baseball.

2025: The Shocking Return of His Velocity
As 2025 began, Hecht took up CrossFit, becoming more interested in fitness, though he had no intention of making a professional comeback. In the fall of 2024, he started feeling better about his pitching mechanics, but he never measured his velocity.
Then, on February 22, 2025, pitching for the Southern Arizona All-Stars—an adult league select team—against Team Germany’s WBC squad, he unexpectedly hit 99 mph (159.3 km/h) on the radar gun. It was the first time he realized that his velocity had dramatically returned.
Following this stunning revelation, he continued to pitch. On March 1, 2025, in a game against Asian Breeze, he recorded 96 mph (154.5 km/h). Impressed by his performance, Asian Breeze invited him to pitch in their March 14 game against the Chicago Cubs, where he once again hit 99 mph (159.3 km/h).
Giants Take Notice
Hecht’s incredible comeback quickly caught the attention of the San Francisco Giants. The night of the Cubs game, Asian Breeze’s manager Mark Minicozzi contacted the Giants, and the organization responded immediately.
On March 15, the Giants officially extended an offer to Hecht, inviting him to their facility for a physical examination. He underwent an MRI scan on March 16, and by March 17, he had signed a minor league contract with the team. The very next day, on March 18, he joined the Giants in camp.
